About Pride in Health

Pride in Health was established in 2021 in Aotearoa to improve healthcare equity for people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and sex characteristics. We aim to improve knowledge in all areas of rainbow health in order to inspire confidence in the delivery of healthcare to our patient.

Our Story

Pride in Health has been set up specifically to address the lack of knowledge we see in health professionals and aims to improve their knowledge and confidence in this area of healthcare in order to create more equitable outcomes for our patients.

Our clinical work as medical doctors allows us to see firsthand the inequities faced by the LGBTQIA+ population and the glaring gaps in health professional knowledge, training and confidence in providing appropriate and equitable healthcare for patients with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

The combination of our own personal experiences with LGBTQIA+ healthcare along with our professional insight into the substantial gaps in education, advocacy and support for health care providers results in a unique opportunity for us to spearhead the work in addressing the inequalities that this community faces.

Each member of our Trust works closely with and/or belongs to the rainbow community. As a result, we share privileged positions within both groups allowing us to identify the issues and come up with ways in which best to address them.

It has also helped to create a strong sense of pride, passion and duty towards the particular kaupapa within the group and we believe we have the vision, resources, knowledge and connections to transform the future of healthcare for LGBTQIA+ people in Aotearoa.

“I would love our healthcare providers to be further up-skilled in delivering gender-affirming healthcare - from our GPs to our endocrinologists to receptionists and orderlies.”

Dr Chuang is a registrar working in ED, Urgent Care and Paediatrics who is passionate about initiating conversations, accelerating change and facilitating an inclusive healthcare model for disadvantaged groups like our LGBTQIA+ patients. With a background in business and a Masters of Entrepreneurship, Dr Chuang enjoys the challenges of seeing new projects start from the ground up. He is excited to work with the other members of this group to improve the quality of healthcare provided to our LGBTQIA+ population.

  • Dr Dane Rua

Dr Dane Rua (He/Him) Ngāti Whātua, Ngāi Tahu

    Secretary, Founding Member

    MBChB, FRNZCGP

Dr Rua is a GP with special interest in takatāpui health. He is of Māori, Cook Island and Pākehā descent but has always called Aotearoa home. During his formative years at The University of Auckland he was introduced to and later inducted into the queer dance group Vogue who went on to win the New Zealand National Dance Championships. This was his first experience with the beautiful variety of people that make up our rainbow community and certainly held his attention throughout his professional career.

Upon graduating he has since spent his years training in his chosen areas of sports medicine, LGBTQIA+ health and reducing inequalities for Māori. He is passionate about targeting these groups as they have all played important parts in his own development, and he also understands how important a positive, nurturing, safe and accepting environment can be in life.

They teach medical students and are particularly invested in meeting the need for more education at the undergraduate level to enable future doctors to have the skills they need to provide culturally sensitive care to LGBTQ+ patients.

Dr Canner has a unique knowledge of the need for better quality of care as well as straightforward referral pathways for gender-diverse patients as they have experienced the challenges and barriers from “both sides of the stethoscope”. They are very excited to be involved in this new initiative to provide education and skills to doctors and medical students, in order to improve the quality of care they provide to LGBTQ+ patients.

Pride in Health Logo

Huriana Kopeke-Te Aho

The logo concept is based around poutama, a pattern that represents whakapapa but also ascension to a higher realm of knowledge. I thought this would represent your kaupapa well.

The black in the design is meant to represent te kore, the realm of limitless potential and te pō, the world of night.

There are 9 stars in this design to symbolise the 9 stars of Matariki. The stars also represent the potential for light in a world of darkness.

We are also incredibly grateful to Huriana for providing the rest of the artwork for our website.
